God the Great I AM
The Almighty GodGod the Creator, Sustainer, Life Giver, Care Taker and Purpose of Life.
Context of StatementThe name "I AM" has a particular significance to both the Old Testament and New Testament Jewish communities. This phrase was the name applied to God and it stems from the encounter Moses had with God at the burning bush back in Exodus chapter three. Moses spoke with God who was telling Moses to return to Egypt to free His people. Moses asked God for a name he could use to answer the children of Israel when they ask for the name of God. The Lord responded... "I AM WHO I AM." And He said, "Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.' ". So for Jesus to say or call Himself "I AM" was take on the very name of God; and to claim that He was equal with God and that He was God.
Significance of StatementThe Bible tells us there is only one God, "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one", "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength." (Deuteronomy 6:4-5) and we see the Lord tell Isaiah, "...And there is no other God besides Me, A just God and a Savior; There is none besides Me. (Isaiah 45:21)". One of the names for God was "I AM", the Lord was the great I AM, so for Jesus to use these statements in this context, was for Jesus to say He was God.
Exodus 3:13 - 153:13 Then Moses said to God, "Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they say to me, 'What is His name?' what shall I say to them?"
3:14 And God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM." And He said, "Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.' "
3:15 Moreover God said to Moses, "Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: 'The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations.'
