God's Gift of Grace to Us

Everyone has sinned, everyone at one point or another has done something or thought something they're not proud of; something that they would not like anyone else to know about, let alone God. That is what Salvation is all about. God wants to have a relationship with you and He gave you a way to receive forgiveness from all sins past, present and future!

We know we are not perfect! Though try as we might no one can achieve perfection all or even most of the time, and God knows that! And that's why He gave us the gift of salvation through the forgiveness of sins. As the Bible says "For by grace you are saved through faith; and not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, Not by works lest any man should boast." (Ephesians 2:8,9)

God Promises, If We Lean On Him, He Direct Our Paths - (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Trust in Me with all your heart and I will guide you.

Reading Notes

This passage tells us to trust in the Lord will all our heart and lean not on our own understanding. It paints a beautiful picture of one making the conscious decision to trust in the Lord and not only trust in Him; but to lean on Him as one would lean on a tree for support. The Holy Spirit indwells all believers and He will not only direct our paths; He will also give us wisdom and discernment as we move forward in Christ. In addition as we read God's word our minds and hearts are strengthened and we gain wisdom for our day to day lives. Also as we grow spiritually we learn not to rely on our own ingenuity; but rather lean on God's understanding. So remember Jesus told us trials will come they're unavoidable; however we can face those trials unprepared on our own or we can face them with God at our side and His wisdom to guide us.

God Gives Grace to the Humble

Bible Verse James 4:2-7

You lust and do not have, murder and covet and cannot obtain, you fight and war. Yet you have not because you do not ask. You do not receive because you ask wrongly that you may spend it on your pleasures. Do you not know friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously therefore God resists the proud; but gives grace to the humble. Therefore submit to God resist the devil and he will flee from you.

Commentary:

In this passage James is speaking about the church at large. Which normally consists of both believers and unbelievers. This also includes the pride and passionate desires that can arise when both are mixed among the church body. The picture that James is painting is that of individuals so consumed by their own desire for gain that they will stop at nothing to get what they want. When James speaks of murder here he is referring to the condition of the heart of an individual harboring hatred or envy for his brethren. This is indicative of someone not filled with the Holy Spirit, in other words someone who is a non-believer.

What James is making clear to his readers is that you cannot love both God and the world system. We cannot focus our minds and hearts on the things of God and service to Jesus if we still have a deep longing and desire for the things of this world. We cannot look forward to Christ if we keep looking back at the world. So James reminds us that those who continue to focus on the world can develop a spirit of envy and pride. Forgetting that God resists the proud. In addition if we continue to focus on the world we open ourselves up to temptation and persuasion that is part of the spiritual warfare waged against us.

All is Worthless Compared to Knowing Christ Jesus

Philippians 3:8-9

Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God's way of making us right with himself depends on faith.

All Blessings Come from God

Matthew 7:11

If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!

Endure in Faith, Endure Through Christ

2nd Timothy 2:11-13

This is a faithful saying: For if we died with Him, We shall also live with Him. If we endure, We shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us. If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.

The Grace of Christ is Exceedingly Abundant

1st Timothy 1:14-16

And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant, with faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. owever, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life.

The Lord is Gracious and Compassionate

Psalm 145:8-9, Hebrews 10:23

The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, Slow to anger and great in mercy. The Lord is good to all, And His tender mercies are over all His works. [Therefore] Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.

We Stand in Christ or Fall in Our Own Power

1st Corinthians 10:11-12

Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.

Jesus Our Faithful High Priest

Hebrews 2:17-18

Therefore, it was necessary for him to be made in every respect like us, his brothers and sisters, so that he could be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God. Then He could offer a sacrifice that would take away the sins of the people. Since he himself has gone through suffering and temptation, he is able to help us when we are being tempted.

Fear Not, Jesus is Always With Us

Isaiah 41:10, 13

Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand. For I, the Lord your God, will hold your right hand, Saying to you, "Fear not, I will help you."

We Are a Living Example of Christ

Romans 12:1

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.

We Conformed to Jesus and Renewed by the Holy Spirit

Romans 12:2

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

We Worship God Through Our Faith in Christ

Luke 4:6-8

And the devil said to Him, "All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours. And Jesus answered and said to him, "Get behind Me, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.' "

Pride the Sin that Brings Death - (Proverbs 13:10)

By pride comes nothing but strife, But with the well-advised is wisdom.

Reading Notes

God is not talking about pride that comes with honest labor, neither is God talking about the pride a parent has when their child makes a moral and just decision on the their own without prompting. God is talking about a destructive sin, a pride that revolves around self. A pride that causes a soul to lift itself above all else even God. A disease that leads to arrogance and a refusal to glorify God. Such pride carries nothing but death and it's the root cause behind many tails of destruction.

Pride is what took Satan from the being the pinnacle of God's creation to the most despised enemy of God giving him a name synonymous with evil. Pride has only one outcome and that is death and destruction for all who claim it. And with its first bite it injects the venom of blindness, which prevents its victims from seeing just how vile they have become to those they love and the world around them. As the venom of arrogance travels to the heart it destroys all flesh and replaces it with stone in order to prevent its victim from seeking a cure. Pride does this in order to ensure as best it can the total destruction of those who harbor it.

Jesus Puts a New Song in the Christian's Soul - (Psalm 32:11-33:3)

Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, you righteous; And shout for joy, all you upright in heart. Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous For praise from the upright is beautiful. Praise the Lord with the harp; Make melody to Him with an instrument of ten strings. Sing to Him a new song; Play skillfully with a shout of joy.

Reading Notes

Because of Jesus we have a new song in our hearts and in these verses God is equating our praise to the music of fine instruments. It's beyond our ability to explain what happens to the human heart that has come to know Christ. God's word tells us we were, "dead in our trespasses and sins", with a "heart of stone"; but when Jesus came into our lives we were revived, brought back to life.

Our heart of stone was replaced with a heart of flesh, a heart now sensitive to the things of God and the needs of others. This is the process of salvation and sanctification, or being made more Christ-like after accepting Jesus as our Lord and savior and one of the natural side effects of this process is a new love and joy for God. A love and joy that puts a new song in our hearts, a song that we cannot help; but sing to our God!

Bible Principle for Today
for Thursday, May 23, 2013

We reap what we sow; but remember reaping is often more than what was sown and latter than we expected and every farmer knows what we reap depends on the seeds that were sown good or bad, were they the things of God or things of this world.

Prayer for Today
for Thursday, May 23, 2013

O God, forgive me for not heeding your warnings, for not summoning my courage, for not asking for your Spirit's power, and for not taking your way of escape. Strengthen me by your Spirit, I pray, and open my eyes to see your way through my times of temptation and sin.
